Agriculture

A needless proposal

The annual flooding of millions of acres of agricultural land along the River Nile in Egypt is an event greeted with celebratory relief. Landowners and agricultural labourers depend on this bountiful river to flood their fields, depositing a fertile layer of silt in the process, then slowly recede so that planting can get under way.

A matter of choice

Concerns that agricultural flood relief may include seeds for Genetically Modified (GMO) Crops may be well founded as figures including Professor Iqbal Choudhry of the International Centre of Chemical and Biological Science at Karachi University are pushing for exactly this.

Agricultural devastation

The increasing incidence of poverty caused by chemical interventions disguised as progressive aid is yet another side of the multifaceted ‘America in Afghanistan’ coin as this not only subjects the civilian population to the threat of sudden death by what is erroneously termed ‘friendly fire’, but it also affects the lives of struggling rural farmers and not ...

Food for thought

Human greed, along with actual inflation, is rapidly pushing the price of foodstuff way beyond the reach of a huge chunk of the population of Pakistan and whilst inflation may or may not be justified, there is certainly no justification for storekeepers who charge prices well above advertised rates or juggle the bill in expectation of getting away with what is a criminal offence.

Water, water, nowhere

Low-level investment in agriculture

Promoting community farming

The agriculture part of Pakistan Peoples Party’s manifesto makes for an interesting reading. If voted back to power, the party promises to do many things, which it has not done during the first tenure. But the document itself proves that the party knows exactly what is wrong with the sector and also knows the solutions.
