Provinces allowed to build power houses: PM

KHUSHHAL GARH: Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani Thursday said the government was undertaking long and short term measures to address its energy needs and has permitted the provinces to build their own power houses to meet the energy shortfall.

A needless proposal

 The annual flooding of millions of acres of agricultural land along the River Nile in Egypt is an event greeted with celebratory relief. Landowners and agricultural labourers depend on this bountiful river to flood their fields, depositing a fertile layer of silt in the process, then slowly recede so that planting can get under way.

Water, water, nowhere

 It is good to know that the Punjab government is, at long last, paying serious attention to the vagaries of climate change. Although, as per usual, absolute and utter idiocy appears to be the rule of the day. Proudly boasting with the ludicrous fanfare it so revels in, that it is initiating flood protection measures which ‘will last 100 years’.

Lost in the flood

*It swept under the doors, through the windows, down the chimney soaking the walls as it came: turning rugs sodden as it crept insidiously across the floor, leaving the house stinking of wet wool, wet cement, wet dogs. The power disappeared three days ago. The phone was off, then on, then off and is now, after pleading with the lineman, back on for the time being.*

WASA clears Nullah Leh to avert flooding of low areas

Post-flood analysis: 87% of water sources unfit for drinking, says watchdog group

KARACHI: There are only four months left before the next monsoon season begins and at least 250 villages have still not been drained of water and 87% of water sources are unfit to be used for drinking in Sindh, according to the People’s Accountability Commission on Floods (PACF).

Fresh spell of monsoon begins

LAHORE:  The new spell of the monsoon rains began on Thursday and the Met Office forecast isolated heavy falls in several cities in Punjab, including Lahore, and upper parts of the country in the next 48 hours.
Heavy rains and strong winds may generate urban and flash flooding in the local rivers and streams, said the Met Department in its warning.
